Manchester City are out of the Champions League after losing 5-1 on aggregate to Liverpool in the quarter-finals.

We went into Tuesday’s second leg with a mountain to climb having suffered a 3-0 defeat at Anfield six days earlier, but a superb first-half display gave hope of a recovery.

Gabriel Jesus scored after two minutes, and just before half-time Bernardo Silva hit the post with a curling effort and Leroy Sane had a goal disallowed.

At that stage, City were very much in the ascendancy with all to play for.

But second-half goals from Mohamed Salah and Roberto Firmino saw Liverpool win 2-1 at the Etihad, putting the game beyond City and comfortably moving them into the semi-finals.

Afterwards, Blues boss Pep Guardiola said: “Liverpool deserve to go through. They are a top team with a top manager.

“In the first half we did absolutely everything, with three at the back we create many chances.

“The second half was quite different and in that competition you have to play 180 minutes, not perfect, but a good, good game.

“Here, the first half was so good. Bernardo hit the post…these kind of games, you have to score goals.

We make 10 months amazingly. Now we go to Tottenham, we have to recover mentally. We have six games, let’s focus on that.”
