Pep Guardiola has paid tribute to Rico Lewis and City’s Academy structure after the versatile defender penned a new five-year deal at the Club.

After a spectacular breakout season in senior football, where the 18-year-old made 22 appearances and impressively helped the Catalan’s side win the Treble, he’s extended his future at the Etihad Stadium until the summer of 2028.

It’s the latest landmark in a sparkling, fledgling career which has seen him lift the Champions League, Premier League, FA Cup and plethora of youth team accolades including the 2021/22 PL U18 National title.

And Guardiola has praised all of those who have helped Lewis on his City journey while giving a special mention to the teenager and his parents.

Speaking in his pre UEFA Super Cup press conference, he said: “You cannot imagine [how good the news is].

“When a player from the Academy signs a five year contract, it is a reality for us [and a] huge compliment to our structure, Academy, for the scouting when he was seven/eight years old and all the managers who have been with him and educated him.

“I am fortunate enough to know his father and mother and they are, and he is, an amazing person.

“It’s incredible for us - for the Club to have a player from the Academy [who] will be here a long time with us, he is amazing.”
