Pep Guardiola has hailed the impact of defender Manuel Akanji, describing it as ‘a joy’ to work with the City defender every day.

The Swiss international signed for City from Borussia Dortmund 13 months ago and went to have a major impact in City’s march to a historic Treble last term.

The 28-year-old’s versatility and constituency have seen him establish himself as a vital part of Guardiola’s squad from the moment he arrived at the Etihad.

Akanji is back in his homeland this week as City prepare for Wednesday night’s latest Champions’ League group clash away to Young Boys.

And addressing the media ahead of the game, the City boss was effusive in his words for praise for Akanji and his impact at the Club.

“Really good, what a signing. We are so lucky to have him,” Pep declared.

“We had a feeling we needed a central defender, so we moved quickly when we had the chance to get him.

“He is a lovely guy, can play in different positions. Normally a central defender but (he can play) right back, holding midfield.

“He is open minded, well educated, so intelligent.

“It’s a joy to work with Manu every single day.”
