Sergio Aguero features in our top story as the Manchester Evening News run quotes from Manuel Pellegrini’s post-match press conference after the Boxing Day victory against Sunderland.
Stu Brennan writes: “Sergio Aguero will be “100 per cent” fit to take on Manchester City’s title rivals Leicester on Tuesday night.
“The Blues boss Manuel Pellegrini has confirmed that Kun is over the “small problem” that saw him left on the bench for the Boxing Day win over Sunderland.
“Aguero had returned to action, following a heel injury, against Arsenal last week, but looked to be short of match sharpness.
“Pellegrini did not expand on the reason he was benched against Sunderland, but he was the only outfield substitute not to warm up during the game, and did not get the expected run-out.
“’Kun was on the bench because if we needed him he could have played in the second half, but we have to play Leicester three days later - a difficult game - and ten games during January,’ said Pellegrini.
“’He had a small problem so I think it was better not to take any risk and we were winning 3-0 at half-time, so I think it was better for him to rest. He will be 100 per cent on Tuesday.’”
Keeping with the theme of returning strikers and Leicester’s Jamie Vardy will fit to return from illness tonight, according to the Leicester Mercury.
Vardy, who is the joint top goal scorer in the Premier League this season with Romelu Lukaku, came off in the Boxing Day defeat at Liverpool due to a fever and Foxes manager Claudio Ranieri is confident he will brush it off in time for the 7.45pm kick off.
“Leicester City’s top scorer Jamie Vardy is a concern ahead of tomorrow’s clash with Manchester City because of illness but manager Claudio Ranieri believes he will also be able to shake off the fever that forced him to be substituted at Liverpool on Boxing Day.
“Vardy, who has scored 15 times this season, was withdrawn in the second half after tiring at Anfield and looked ill as he left the ground.
“After admitting his players may have shown signs of fatigue during the 1-0 defeat at Anfield Ranieri said he is considering freshening up his side.
“City have been the most consistent side in the Premier League in terms of selection but Ranieri said he may look to make changes.
“’I don’t know, I could make changes,’ he said.
“’We will have a look in training and I will speak to the players and I will look at them.’
“’We have another day and then I decide, but I think Vardy will be okay.’”
And finally, Bacary Sagna has revealed that he stays behind after training with compatriot Eliaquim Mangala to help him improve his game.
Sagna is quoted in a number of news outlets, with these particular quotes being used in an article on the Daily Mail website.
“I stay with him after training, to work on his position and control of the ball and he’s doing quite a lot to make a difference.
“He wants to get better. He doesn’t ask me, but I want to help him. No matter what, we try to communicate, to analyse when we concede goals what he should have done a bit better.
“He’s going to be a great defender one day. Now we just have to be patient. I think it’s just about confidence.
“I want to remind everyone that to come and play in this league is not easy at all. I had a chance to come [to Arsenal] and it was different for me. I came at the same age and from the first season I had, everything went well.
“Now we have a setback with him, but he started the season very well. I’ve been blamed, he has been blamed, but that’s football. He’s doing his maximum to improve.”
