With just over three weeks of the transfer window left to run, transfer speculation is intensifying – and Manchester City are rarely too far away from the gossip columns.

And this morning is no different, with the Blues understood to be playing the waiting game over the transfer of Arsenal star Alexis Sanchez.

Paul Hetherington, writing in the Star, believes the Chilean forward remains firmly on City’s wishlist this summer.

However, he says Arsene Wenger is adamant he will not allow his star man to leave – but insists City remain confident Sanchez wants to move to the Etihad.

“Manchester City are prepared to play the waiting game in an attempt to land top target Alexis Sanchez,” Hetherington writes.

“The Arsenal forward is in the final year of his contract in North London but boss Arsene Wenger is adamant he WILL NOT be sold.

“City, though, believe Sanchez wants to join them and will leave the door open until the transfer window closes at the end of this month.

“They are still hopeful that Arsenal will decide to cash in at around £45m, rather than run the risk of losing Sanchez, 28, for nothing when his contract expires next summer.

“But Wenger has insisted Sanchez is going nowhere and the Frenchman is adamant that club owner Stan Kroenke and the rest of the board are fully behind that stubborn stance.”

It’s a story that has constantly re-emerged throughout the summer and it looks likely to run and run.

Meanwhile, former Arsenal and Portsmouth forward Paul Merson, now a Sky Sports pundit, has backed City to lift the Premier League trophy at the end of the season.

He believes the Blues’ attacking capability, as well as the pace added to the defence this summer, means Pep Guardiola‘s new-look side are the team to beat in the coming campaign.

“Going forward they are very strong, and they have bought players at the back. Pep Guardiola has bought well, bought a lot of pace in the team at the back, including Kyle Walker,” Merson says
