The versatile Bayern Munich defender knows Pep Guardiola well after their time together in Germany and several media outlets carry the latest in a long line of rumours involving the Blues this summer.
101 Great Goals write: “Manchester City are set to sign Bayern Munich star Javi Martinez, according to reports breaking on Saturday.
“Guardiola was believed to be drafting in a mystery centre-half and it looks as though it’s Martinez. The pair have worked together before during Guardiola’s time as Bayern manager. Martinez impressed with his versatility.
“BT Sport journalist Anthony Harris regularly covers City and claims that Martinez and Dani Alves will have medicals with the club next week. Alves’ transfer from Juventus has been anticipated for weeks now.
“We await further reports of a deal. At this moment in time, it’s not exactly clear as to why Bayern would sell unless they were given an offer they couldn’t refuse for the experienced 28-year-old.”
The Mirror, meanwhile, claim alleged City target Kyle Walker is hopeful a move to the Blues could be finalised within the next fortnight.
The Spurs and England star has been linked since last season ended and the report reads: “Kyle Walker expects to be a Manchester City player by the time Pep Guardiola’s stars head off on their US tour to America next month.
“Tottenham and England right-back Walker has told pals he hopes his move will happen in the next two weeks, despite Spurs chairman Daniel Levy playing hardball over the fee.
“The two clubs are still some way apart in valuation with Levy demanding close to £50million for the 27-year-old, but an agreement is expected to be reached in the coming days.
“Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino wants the deal rubber-stamped quickly so he can move for a replacement early in the window, which officially opens next Saturday (July 1).”
And considering the transfer window officially opens in six days, that’s probably it for today with the selection of stories surprisingly slim.
However, we couldn’t end without a moment of Guardiola magic on the greens as he took part in the Icons of Football golf tournament over the weekend.
Partnering Ryan Giggs, Pep produced a chip Rory McIlroy would be proud of as he and Giggs secured a 9-7 win for the Rest of the World against England.
Enjoy the shot and we’ll be back with more gossip and rumour tomorrow…
