Vincent Kompany has reflected on what it took for City to beat Liverpool to last season’s Premier League title, as we dissect Friday morning’s headlines.

Our former captain has penned a first-person account of 2018/19’s title race, whilst elsewhere Gabriel Jesus has discussed the pressure to score goals.

From the players

FourFourTwo: Kompany – “I tell you what: I want to beat Liverpool more than anyone else”

“For all of the talk, the meetings and the videos analysed, games like our 2-1 win against Liverpool at the Etihad come down to that desire.

“I will never forget Fernandinho’s challenge in the first five minutes. And then Bernardo Silva made a tackle, and the tone was set.

“That desire, that hunger from players – some who are used to making challenges, some less so – decided the game for us.”

Independent: Gabriel Jesus admits to taking criticism ‘personally’ after goalscoring struggles

“When I’m not happy with me I want to shoot myself in the head because it’s difficult for me. I take it (personally) of course. I think, ‘Oh my God, I have to score, I have to score, I have to score’.

“When I have the chance sometimes I miss because I think too much and put too much pressure on myself. I try, I’m getting better. I’m working to score and don’t think about the pressure.”

Statistics

Manchester Evening News: Phil Foden’s Man City stats vs Dinamo Zagreb laid bare after stunning performance

Writes Josh Challies: “Foden had 101 touches during the match and boasted a pass accuracy of 92 per cent, as well as finishing the match with a tackle success rate of 100 per cent.

“Running with the ball, Foden had five take-ons completed, including his drive from midfield in the build-up for the first City goal of the evening, capping off his performance with a goal and an assist.”
