Rico Lewis was left overjoyed after being awarded the Player of the Match award following our 3-1 Champions League victory over Young Boys.

Manuel Akanji prodded us ahead shortly after half-time, with the hosts striking back instantly through Meschack Elia.

Erling Haaland put us back ahead from the penalty spot, before securing the three points with a curling strike into the top corner.

Lewis was as lively as ever, having 96 touches of the ball, a 100% tackle success rate and 91% pass accuracy in Switzerland, earning the 18-year-old the Player of the Match award.

“I’ve been wanting this for a while,” he said. “Today, I was a bit frustrated with the goal against us, I think I could have done better there.

“But after five minutes I let that go, and tried to create chances for us.

“I got back into the game. I’m buzzing. It was good. It’s a difficult game, a different challenge for us, the surface and the weather, the environment we’re in that they’re used to.

“But as you saw, the team is so good at adapting. We played so good in the first half, it was more back and forth in the second half but we got the job done.

“That’s how it goes. There’s a lot of chances in the game. If you don’t take them it could be difficult.

“In the end, the forwards scored their chances. We got the job done and won the game.”

Haaland claimed his first goals of the 2023/24 Champions League campaign, helping to extend our unbeaten run in the competition to 16 matches.

The striker now has 13 goals in 13 Champions League matches with City and Lewis was quick to praise his teammate after another match-winning display.

“He’s like any other striker. People get onto him more than other strikers because of the year he had last year.

“But he’s come away with two goals and people call him anxious. He’s scored two goals today.

“It’s a credit to him and what he did last year.

Lewis also looked ahead to this weekend’s Premier League clash with rivals Manchester United.

“They’re always special, for me, playing or not. It’s amazing to be a part of. We know what we need to do.

“We take it game by game and we do our best to win.”
