Kevin De Bruyne has assisted Erling Haaland 16 times across all competitions since the start of the 2022/23 season.

That is more than any player in the five top European leagues has teed up a team-mate in that time period.

Their tally is three better than the next best - Lionel Messi to Kylian Mbappe - and six better than the next currently active partnership in Europe - Darwin Nunez to Mohamed Salah.

Haaland also has an excellent relationship with Phil Foden, with the pair assisting each other five times.

De Bruyne set up Haaland four times in Tuesday’s FA Cup victory at Luton Town, with the Norwegian eventually scoring five times as we ran out 6-2 winners.

Both players have missed significant chunks of this season but continue to set the pace in their own areas of expertise.

De Bruyne has now registered 12 assists in just 12 appearances in 2023/24 while Haaland has 27 goals in 30 games and 79 in 83 in total for City.

It took just four minutes for the partnership to bear fruit in this game, with De Bruyne pulling the ball back for Haaland to sweep home.

It was three before half-time and the fourth combination was done before the hour mark.

De Bruyne had a total of 63 touches while Haaland played the ball 38 times - the 16th most of those on the pitch.

A quick comparison of the pair’s Heat Maps shows the spaces they were operating in throughout the game, with De Bruyne in the channels and behind Haaland, who came alive around the goal.

This link up saw City create plenty of chances on the night, amassing an xG of 3.77 - well below the six we netted.

We also had 17 shots on the night, although Luton took 14 themselves to create 2.63 xG.

Those statistics perhaps outline that the true difference between the sides was the prolific nature of the finishes by Haaland.

Fluidity

Pep Guardiola‘s footballing philosophy has often seen players asked to stick to a position and role within the formation as a whole.

However, what we saw on Tuesday and have seen in recent weeks, were free roles for the likes of Bernardo Silva, Matheus Nunes and most notably, John Stones.

Stones has started as a centre-back but given license to press high out of position and push forward into spaces on the ball.

His touch map demonstrates just how broad the England international’s current remit within this City side is.

FA Cup stats this season

In just one appearances, Erling Haaland has become the second top scorer in this season’s competition. He is one behind Sammie Szmodics of Blackburn, who were knocked out last night.

Kevin De Bruyne‘s five assists is the most in the competition, with no other players remaining in the competition above two.

Mateo Kovacic averages 79.4 passes per 90 minutes, which is the most of any player in the competition.

Jeremy Doku‘s 4.9 dribbles per 90 is the leader for that metric.
