About Alex
Since donning the blue and white for the first time in September 2020, Greenwood has been a mainstay at the heart of City’s defence and is undoubtedly one of the team’s most consistent players.
Hot off an impressive season that saw the left-back appear in all 38 games, the Liverpool-native has been described as one of the team’s unsung heroes by several members of Gareth Taylor’s squad.
A strong and reliable presence for the City backline, Greenwood has also contributed to the attacking end of the pitch with five goals to her name. Despite only joining the team less than two years ago, she is already just shy of 70 City appearances and has maintained a strong record of clean sheets.
The defender’s talent and leadership has shone through with her nomination for February 2022’s FA WSL Player of the Month and win of the 2022 PFA Vertu Motors Fans’ February Player of the Month triumph.
Greenwood was also shortlisted for the Club’s 2021/22 Player of the Season award, and made the prestigious PFA WSL 2021/22 Team of the Year.
Awards aside, the 28-year-old has earned her fair share of hardware. She won her first trophy for City a few months after making her debut, lifting the 2020 FA Cup at Wembley, before helping her side to Continental Cup glory with victory over Chelsea in March 2022.
Internationally, boasting almost 60 caps to her name, the defender helped England to SheBelieves Cup and Arnold Clark Cup success in addition to being an integral member of the squad who reached the semi-finals of the 2019 World Cup.
When Greenwood signed for City, Managing Director Gavin Makel said: “Alex is a highly experienced international whose technical abilities and willingness to succeed will only further strengthen the team… Her best years are still to come.”
Comfortable in possession with superb distribution and an excellent passing range, she is a technically-gifted defender with a willingness to put her body on the line for the cause.
Driving standards for herself and the rest of the team, and with an open and honest approach, she leads by example and has done so with the captain’s armband on her sleeve, skippering admirably in the absence of Steph Houghton and Ellen White.
Those qualities are also clear for all to see when she steps onto the international stage with immense pride to represent her country. Will Greenwood gain gold?
