United’s exit from the UEFA Champions League meant they were placed in Group B with City, Leicester, Liverpool and Everton.

They currently sit top of the group, with City hot on their heels in second.

But what do we need to guarantee our place in the Conti Cup knockout stages?

Here is a breakdown of the permutations and City’s Conti Cup 2023/24 journey to date:

City win

The equation is simple; if City get another derby win, then we’re guaranteed to qualify for the quarter-finals.

Marc Skinner’s side top the group with nine points from three games, with City close behind on seven points.

Leicester are the only other team in Group B who could potentially finish above us, but they would need a win against Everton and hope that we lose against United for that to happen.

Draw + Penalty win

City would still have a strong chance of qualifying as one of the two best second-placed teams in the group stages if we were to pick up the extra point from a penalty victory.

At present, Sunderland (Group A) and Tottenham Hotspur (Group D) sit above us in the rankings due to their superior goal difference.

Bettering one of their results across the game week would be enough in this instance, with Sunderland hosting Aston Villa and Spurs away to Southampton.

Draw + Penalty loss

While unlikely, City can still reach the Continental Cup quarter-finals with a penalty defeat as long as several other results fall in our favour.

All eyes would firstly be on Leicester, with Willie Kirk’s side leapfrogging us into second should they beat Everton and finish with a superior goal difference.

The results of Sunderland v Aston Villa, London City Lionesses v Crystal Palace, Southampton v Tottenham, Charlton v Brighton and Birmingham v West Ham could also have a bearing on our qualification prospects should that be the outcome at the Joie Stadium.

Defeat

While unlikely, City could still technically qualify for the knockout stages with a defeat at the Joie Stadium.

Among other results, we would firstly once again be reliant on Leicester failing to beat Everton in their final group fixture.
