Biography and City Career:
Sergio ‘Kun’ Agüero was born in Buenos Aires, Argentina on the 2nd June 1988 He started playing football at the age of 9, when he joined the Independiente’s Youth Team. He was signed by Atletico Madrid in 2006, before joining Manchester City on July 27th, 2011.
Sergio Agüero has carved his name into Manchester City history as the club’s all-time top goal scorer. This City legend was a record signing for the club at £38 million in 2011. The Argentine made his debut for City on August 15th, 2011 against Swansea at the Etihad and then went on to score 30 times in this title-winning first season. One of City’s most iconic moments belongs to Agüero, as he scored the crucial 93:20 goal to beat QPR and seal the Club’s first Premier League title at the expense of Manchester United, on the final day of the season in 2012.
Kun has been crucial to the success of the club and he has 13 medals to show for his nine seasons of incredible service: Four Premier League, 5 Carabao Cup, 1 FA Cup and 3 Community Shield form the Argentine’s collection.
Notable facts/stories:
The nickname “Kun” is taken from a Japanese cartoon he used to watch as a child, where the main character was called ‘Kum-Kum’. He was said to have looked like Kum Kum and the nickname just stuck. However, it wasn’t easy for Agüero to have his childhood nickname on the back of his shirt. The Premier League stated Agüero could have “Kun” on the back if he had used it in another league. Fortunately for Agüero, this was the case at Atletico Madrid, as he had previously had his nickname printed on the back of his shirt.
Non-City career:
In 2004, Sergio became the youngest Argentine to play in the ‘Copa Libertadores’. His performance earned him a spot in the national ‘Under-20’ team. This team then went onto competing in the 2005 ‘FIFA Under-20 World Cup,’ which was actually won by Argentina. In 2006, Agüero made his National First Team debut in an international friendly against Brazil, at The Emirates Stadium, England. One year later, Aguero scored his first goal for Argentina in a World Cup Qualifier match, against Bolivia.
On July 5th, 2003, at the age of 15, Sergio became the youngest Argentine player to participate in the Argentine Primera División, playing for Independiente. Agüero’s performances caught the attention of Spanish Giants, Atletico Madrid and on August 1st, 2006, they signed him for a transfer fee of £15 million. Agüero scored 7 goals, in his first season at Atletico Madrid. The next season turned out to be a great year for him as he helped Atletico earn a place in the UEFA Champions League and Sergio finished as league’s 3rd highest goal scorer, scoring 19 goals over the season. His last season at Atletico Madrid saw him score 20 goals before leaving to join City at the end of the 2010-11 season.
